Park Min Young to play the ‘it-girl’ for Chinese remake of ‘Gossip Girl’

Last we heard of the Chinese remake of hit American show ‘Gossip Girl’, Kim Bum wascast for one of the roles back in June 2014. Now reports are saying that the show is still underway and that actress Park Min Young will be joining the project, playing the main role of ‘it-girl’ Serena van der Woodsen, originally portrayed by Blake Lively.
Taiwanese media states that Park Min Young is known among Chinese audiences for her role in the 2011 K-Drama ‘City Hunter,’ making her an optimal candidate for one of ‘Gossip Girl’s leading ladies.

On March 31, Park Min Young’s agency told Korean media outlet The Fact, “Park Min Young has received a love call from China and has decided to film for China’s remake of ‘Gossip Girl.'” They added, “We anticipate a strong first season like that of the original. Park Min Young will be working hard to show a good image for her first Chinese drama.”
The American show ‘Gossip Girl’, based on the book series of the same title, follows the story of a group of SNS-savvy, affluent high school students pursuing love and business in New York City. The Chinese remake will be making some changes to this story as it will take place in Shanghai and will focus on people in their 20s living in the top 1% of the country in terms of income and wealth. The upcoming show will be a joint production between the U.S.’s Warner Brothers and a Chinese production company.

Park Min Young is scheduled to fly to China in May to start filming and working on her portrayal of her character Serena. Are you excited to see how this goes? We are!

Park Min Young Doesn’t Care for Looking Pretty Anymore, Shrugs Off Criticism about Her Looks

In a candid interview with Star News, actress Park Min Young opens up about the lessons she learned during her two-year hiatus and how it fortified her to deal with harsh netizen criticisms about her looks while she was on the drama “Healer.”

She says, “I think this past two-year hiatus was a big turning point for me […] It was a time for me to empty myself and an opportunity to reflect. In the past, even if nobody was pressuring me, I felt pressure. The pressure and the vague fear of being forgotten were really big. At a certain point, acting became less enjoyable for me, and because I wasn’t able to fully immerse myself into my characters, I felt dissatisfied and empty. But as I took a break from acting and engaged in self-reflection, I began to treasure and experience a thirst [for acting]. It was then that I crossed paths with ‘A New Leaf.’”

“A New Leaf” would become Park Min Young’s comeback drama and the launching pad for “Healer,” “Because of the two years I took emptying myself, I was able to completely focus on acting without any idle thoughts. There was never a time that acting was more enjoyable […] I also completely let go of the idea that I had clung to stubbornly, that an actress has to no matter what look pretty.”

The actress is referring to her role as a spunky and free-spirited entertainment reporter in “Healer,” “For the first time, I abandoned myself and only thought about the character. From the hairstyle to the clothes, makeup, and fashion, I adapted everything to the character.”

She continued, “Because [I let myself go], I received quite a lot of harsh comments. (laughter) Because my character doesn’t care about her looks and lives so busily and coarsely, I filmed that way. I just laughed while reading malicious comments like, ‘I thought she was pretty, but her beauty has deteriorated,’ ‘I didn’t know she was that ugly,’ and ‘Did she get surgery to get uglier?’”

“Obviously, as an actress, it’s not the ideal situation, but as I gradually immersed myself more and more into the acting without being concerned about the angles [of the shot], everything freed up and became comfortable […] Through letting go of that one desire [to look pretty], I became freer as an actress, to the point that I wondered why I didn’t do this earlier. Because my body and mind are at ease, I don’t have any useless thoughts. Acting becomes fun, and my desire to act only flourishes.”

26.03.14 Park Min Young makes a powerful comeback with new drama: Waiting for two years for the best comeback

Over the past few months, there were rumours that three dramas were courting Park Min Young to make her comeback.  However, only one of these rumours came true.The first rumour was that she would act with Lee Jong Suk in ‘Doctor Stranger’, the second rumour was that she would act with Lee Seung Gi and Cha Seung Won in ‘You are Surrounded’. However, she decided to make her comeback in ‘A New Leaf’.

In this drama she will act as Lee Ji Yoon, a girl from a poor background who graduated from a third rate law school, but fortunately, she gets the post of an intern in a top law firm and becomes the assistant of the top lawyer played by Kim Myung Min. At first, the hero doesn’t care about her,but they become closer after he loses his memory in a traffic accident. Although the accident is unfortunate, it gives him a chance to turn over a new leaf.

It’s Park Min Young’s comeback drama two years after Dr.Jin. It’s not the first time that she is choosing to have a rest between her previous role and the latest one. She got great popularity after “HighKick”,but she was not sure what to do after that. Although she received  much praise,it took her much time to make a decision.

“I’m so grateful to be favourably assessed by many people,but I feel that I should slow down and walk steadily and be surefooted at every step.” Park Min Young said.

She acted in “I am Sam”, “Hometown Legends” etc,and received much praise, but she didn’t think that she was an actor. “I didn’t know what acting was in the beginning,I just enjoyed it.” She said,”When I acted in “Princess Ja Myung Go”,I started to learn acting and just then the drama came to an end.” (^_^)

13. 01. 2014 Korean blogger runs into Park Min Young vacationing in Paris with actress Kim Min Seo (October 2013)

  

This Korean blogger when honeymooning in Europe from October 20-22, 2013 had the lucky fate of crossing paths with Min Young thrice on the same day in Paris. The third time it happened, she plucked up the courage to ask Min Young, “Hello! Are you travelling? Can I take a pic with you?” Min Young was complete willingness and the blogger was overjoyed and also impressed with Min Young’s beauty. She said Min Young was vacationing with her friend, actress Kim Min Seo  (gisaeng Chosun of Sungkyunkwan Scandal).

And guess where Min Young was found? In Place du Tertre near Montmatre, which is an art lover’s paradise. According to wiki, “with its many artists setting up their easels each day for the tourists, the Place du Tertre is a reminder of the time when Montmartre was the mecca of modern art. At the beginning of the 20th century, many penniless painters including Picasso and Utrillo were living there.” Min Young and Min Seo can be seen in the second pic checking out the paintings. 

Remember how during the weibo Q&A on her recent visit to China, one of the fans had asked her who took her pics when travelling. Min Young had then replied, “Thanks. I will tell her”. Guess now we know who we have to be thankful to for those gorgeous pics from Paris at least.

Good to know the two ladies found time for their Paris trip despite their schedules and all. After Min Young had visited Paris in November 2010, she had tweeted about meeting up with Kim Min Seo in December and having wine together. In February 2013, when Min Young had sent her stylist madeline cakes, Kim Min Seo had tweeted reminding Min Young of her promise to cook for her and Min Young had asked her to call her up whenever she felt like coming over with the promise that she will prepare something delicious for her. 14. 01. 04. Park Min Young had come to Hongkong recently to celebrate New Year privately, and she was found searching for cakes on the XXX street which is famous for its delicacies.

Korean star Park Min Young has acted in many popular dramas such as City Hunter and Sungkyunkwan Scandal，but she hasn’t acted in any new dramas after Dr.Jin. She was found on the XXX street with her manager and other two persons. She was polite and stood still for the cameras when the reporters started taking photos.Park Min Young uploaded the photo that she took in front of XXX restaurant and left messages in English. She said “Happy new year to everybody” (on her weibo). It is said that she has come to Hongkong for a few days .

Signs with new agency* 

After one year’s break,Park Min Young ended the contract with her old agency early in May. It took her about six months to consult with different agencies. Finally she signed with Jun Ji Hyun’s agency in November. So she will take new dramas and go for overseas activities this year.

Lee Min Ho loved her sincerely before**

Lee Min Ho had fallen in love with Park Min Young during City Hunter though it was a pity they broke up later. In a recent interview, Min Ho revealed that his last love was “the love” that was known to all.He hinted that after breaking up with her, he hasn’t had a girl friend. He had loved his girl friend sincerely, but he said that he was not able to be brave like Kim Tan in Heirs. Since he is an idol actor (one with huge popularity), he will not reveal his relationships in the future as well.

[This is an excerpt from her Anya interview where Min Young discusses her Paris trip and characters. The part about her discussion of skin care has not been translated]

MC：We heard that you shared photos of your trip to Paris with fans, Would you please share something interesting?

MY: I enjoy travelling, and have travelled to many places. I took rest for a long time during this period, so I went to Paris for a trip. Paris makes me feel relaxed, it makes both my heart and spirit relaxed. I can also feel an atmosphere of art there, so I especially like it . I recommend it and ask everyone to go there if you get a chance.

MC: All your dramas impressed us deeply. Among roles such as spy, doctor etc, which one do you like the most? Are there any roles that you especially want to try?

MY: I have played some roles like a bodyguard and spy. Previously I had believed that these kind of roles didn’t suit my image, I never thought I could get such roles, so these roles impressed me deeply. You ask me what kind of role I want to try? Today on 14/11, representatives of agency Culture Depot Entertainment said, “We are negotiating the contract with Park Min Young. Though the contract has not been finalised, a verbal agreement has been reached between the two parties and it will be formalised by the middle of next week.

The representative said, “We found that Park Min Young is an actor with the most potential among actors in their 20s. She took a break for about an year and now is the time for her to return to acting. Because we feel both of us can help each other to grow, we decided to work together”.

After the expiration of her contract with her former agency King Kong in May, Min Young has been looking for a new agency for 6 months. Min Young has been in contact with many agencies, but finally chose Culture Depot. Culture Depot is home to movie star Jun Ji Hyun.
