Park Min Young to play the ‘it-girl’ for Chinese remake of ‘Gossip Girl’

Last we heard of the Chinese remake of hit American show ‘Gossip Girl’, Kim Bum wascast for one of the roles back in June 2014. Now reports are saying that the show is still underway and that actress Park Min Young will be joining the project, playing the main role of ‘it-girl’ Serena van der Woodsen, originally portrayed by Blake Lively.
Taiwanese media states that Park Min Young is known among Chinese audiences for her role in the 2011 K-Drama ‘City Hunter,’ making her an optimal candidate for one of ‘Gossip Girl’s leading ladies.

On March 31, Park Min Young’s agency told Korean media outlet The Fact, “Park Min Young has received a love call from China and has decided to film for China’s remake of ‘Gossip Girl.'” They added, “We anticipate a strong first season like that of the original. Park Min Young will be working hard to show a good image for her first Chinese drama.
The American show ‘Gossip Girl’, based on the book series of the same title, follows the story of a group of SNS-savvy, affluent high school students pursuing love and business in New York City. The Chinese remake will be making some changes to this story as it will take place in Shanghai and will focus on people in their 20s living in the top 1% of the country in terms of income and wealth. The upcoming show will be a joint production between the U.S.’s Warner Brothers and a Chinese production company.

Park Min Young is scheduled to fly to China in May to start filming and working on her portrayal of her character Serena. Are you excited to see how this goes? We are!

Q: You and Ji Chang Wook are referred by the fans as the “Healing Couple” in <Healer>, did you feel the popularity of the drama while filming?
A: Actually I wasn’t aware of its popularity during filming, it’s only now that it has ended that I’m aware after seeing everyone’s reactions. I think everyone calls us the “Healing Couple”? “Two-Capsules Couple”? They all sound really nice, so thank you very much everyone. We ended filming in this kind of happy atmosphere. Because the two protagonists are very cute characters that heal each other, I think the biggest reason we’re able to receive so much love from the audience is because of the characters’ power.

(0:53)
Q: Did you cut your hair short for this drama?
A: Yes. I used to have really long hair, down to my waist. In order to match with the character, I thought about what type of hair style would suit the entertainment reporter Young Shin best. Short hair gives off the most lively/energetic feel, and looks natural even without much styling. Add to that its fluffy feel like after a shower. I thought this style would be the most fitting and so the decision was made after talking over it. It’s also a good chance for a transformation!

(1:35)
Q: Do you personally like short or long hair more?
A: I feel that long hair has its own elegance, but short hair is really convenient. It’s easy to take care of and light. I think short hair is better for the spine? But I think fan’s reaction is 50-50.

(1:58)
Q: In <Healer>, Chae Young Shin sometimes sings and dances, getting all high by herself. Are you also usually the type to get high by yourself?
A: I’m actually originally the “high” type. If I just have the place to show it, like a wrap-up party, I for sure won’t miss it. When I’m by myself, I’ll frequently relieve my stress like Young Shin. Sometimes I feel Young Shin is too much like me that I’m surprised myself. I’ll think, is the writer watching me? Chae Young Shin is that type of character that shares a lot of similarities with me.

(2:29)
Q: There are a lot of sweet scenes in <Healer>, how did you avoid awkwardness first time partnering up with Ji Chang Wook?
A: After debut, this is the first time I acted in a drama with so many romance scenes. Luckily, for the first kiss, the beanie was pulled down to here (to the chin before filming). I didn’t feel that much of a burden. Originally, the first kiss scene is always the most nervous one, but for that scene, it was a kiss scene where Jung Hoo acted by Ji Chang Wook took the initiative. In comparison, I was more relaxed and just followed his lead. The sweet scenes afterward were filmed after we got close so the times where we’re at a loss as to what to do also decreased.

(3:12)
Q: Do you personally have a special method to get into a scene?
A: I feel that I am able to convey the character’s feelings most accurately when I confront a scene after completely immersed into my character. Rather than a special method, I believe the first thing is to immerse yourself into the character. Try your hardest to get as close to the character itself as possible, then the emotions will for sure naturally follow.

(4:03)
Q: In real life, can you accept a boyfriend with such a “special” job like in the drama?
A: Actually I frequently thought about it when I was watching the edited scenes, how a guy that fights like that is really handsome. But if it’s in real life, isn’t a job like Healer kind of too dangerous? You won’t know when he’ll get hurt, my heart will ache for him. If it’s that kind of special job, I’ll just stop him while he’s disguised as Park Bong Soo, and not let him go be Healer.

(4:37)
Q: When you’re in love, are you more of the type to rely on your boyfriend, or the more independent type?
A: This depends on the person, I’ll behave differently. If the man is someone who is very understanding and reliable, I’ll unconsciously open my heart to him and tell him all of my worries. If he is not (that kind of person), depending on his situation, it may the opposite and I’ll turn out to be the listener. I think in that way I’ll be more independent? In short, it depends on the other person’s situation, I’ll naturally change along.

(5:14)
Q: In <A New Leaf> and <Healer>, you tried out characters with different jobs, what kind of character do you wish to challenge next?
A: It’ll be nice if I don’t have a job next time. Without a job and just living together with parents in a wealthy family. Moreover, a bum without a job who wanders around also sounds nice. As for personality, should be the sharp type. In other words, a character with a bad personality. I’d like to give that kind of character a try. I’ve also displayed a little of my crazy side, so even if it’s past that line, I think it’ll be interesting too. I really want to try out characters that are completely crazy. I feel my ambition for acting is getting bigger and bigger.

(5:58)
Q: Have you ever thought of acting as a villain?
A: If it’s a true villain role, I think it’ll be really interesting! Compared to the character types I had before, there are still so many different types I haven’t tried yet. This has also become the motivation for me to continue acting without rest. I’ll be afraid if there are increasingly less type of characters I want to try out. Of course, even if it’s not a complete villain but rather one that sort of strays from the usual path of a kindhearted character, I feel that kind of role will also be able to quench my thirst a little. In that sense, through Young Shin this time, I felt a strange delight and the happiness acting brings, as well as a sense of satisfaction. If there’s a nice villain role, I’d like to handsomely try it once.

(7:00)
Q: After seeing so many villain roles, is there any character in particular that you feel you can do a better job at?
A: No. I really like the movie <Black Swan>. The female lead has a dual personality, like the multiple personality characters popular in Korea nowadays. I really like Natalie Portman, her performance always has this two-sided depth which makes it really charming. I feel that character is the most charming among recent works.

(7:36)
Q: Any special method you use to take care of your skin?
A: Sleep is the most important for the skin, but when you have a job like ours, that’s actually something you have to give up. In that case, try to eat food good for the body as much as possible. Also, I feel that my skin gets increasingly dry by the year. For that, you must be diligent in using facial masks and basic cosmetics. Whenever I have the time, I’ll remove my foundation and try to at least put on a facial mask to let my skin rest. Even though these all look like small things, they help greatly. The more effort you put in, the better your skin. I believe you have to be diligent first of all.

(8:23)
Q: I hear you went on a diet for the drama, how do you usually take care of your body?
A: This is my first time dieting. Dancing, walking up and down the stairs, running on treadmill, I lost weight exercising like that. Actually it’s not enough to just exercise, you need to regulate your diet too. As those people who exercise know, if you control your diet, you will lose weight but you’ll also lose the fun in eating. So I think the ideal weight loss plan is to happily eat as much as possible, but also increase your exercise amount. If you want to eat meat, then eat meat. And then when you’re adequately full, increase your exercise amount. Isn’t this a healthy way to diet? I recommend this method! It’s not good to force anything, and your body won’t accept it as well.

(9:21)
Q: Fans all wish for Park Min Young to come to China. Are there any plans to expand into China in 2015?
A: Even though I’m unsure of the date, but I do have plans. I think I’ll be able to meet everyone on screen sooner than I expected. I wanted to give everyone a surprise, but it seems the plan is sooner than I think. Fans in China, we may be able to meet this year through a project!

TheStar Chosun interview ‘Actress Park Min Young praised Ji Chang Wook’s sense of humour’

In a recent interview with The Star, Park Min Young said, “I’m not great at other things, but I have a good sense of humor that can match male actors. I was able to film happily with my male co-stars in the past.”
She said, “In contrast, Ji Chang Wook is quite boring. Before the filming of “Healer”, one of my worries was: I’m someone who loves to have fun when filming, what do I do if my partner is boring?”, stating her worry back then.
In order to get into the character of hoobae-sunbae entertainment news reporters in the drama, Park Min Young lets go of the awkwardness of their initial meeting, and approached Ji Chang Wook first in order to get close to him. She said, “This is what I said to Ji Chang Wook: All entertainment news reporter sunbaes call their hoobaes “this kid/boy”, so it’s okay if I treat you casually too, no need to be nervous, we’ll just do it this way.”
She continued, “I’m not the type of person to quickly reply back on KakaoTalk even with my mom. But when I see a message from JCW come, I’ll quickly reply back with “Yes, I ate already,” and in doing so we got close fast. I had worried what to do if the KakaoTalk chat turn out to be boring too, but good thing they’re interesting. Later on, through his character JCW’s gag level rose up to 1-2, it became legendary status.” She gave a big thumbs up after saying that.

BNT News, Park Min Young talks about [Healer] Ji Chang Wook: He said my Young Shin is the cutest

When did it all start? Cutting off her long hair, and laughing heartily with a wrinkled face.
Singing and dancing whenever, wherever, and willing to give up everything for an exclusive. Just as the beautiful female reporter fights alone to uncover the truth, the various noises surrounding her also gradually disappear at the same time. People no longer think of her as pretentious, what she left on the screen was not the image of an actress, but the real Chae Young Shin. This is actress Park Min Young.
Recently, after wrapping up the KBS drama Healer, bntnews sat down with actress Park Min Young for an interview.  Originally thinking that she would be pretentious, we were wrong. An actress who loves to hear others say she is funny, she laughed without reserve, and also brought about much laughter.
“I had to yell/get mad in front of the chief because of a report, sing in front of Ji Chang Wook who’s really good at singing, and even dance in front of Yoo Ji Tae-sunbae who has a background in professional dancing. (laughs) Because Chae Young Shin is so interesting, the atmosphere at the filming site was always really pleasant. I’m also quite aware that it’s not easy to meet such a nice set, staff, actors, and this character, so I’m feeling quite sad when it’s all over.”
The deep affection she has for the project cannot be described with words. From her simple words and the expression in her eyes when talking about the project, we could feel her deep love for [Healer]. Because it is “a project I really treasure and love”, all the more “I hope people will like it too.”
“I feel quite empty after it’s over, but good thing in the last scene Jung Hoo and Young Shin’s expressions were bright. Even as an actor, I wish that the two will be happy because they went through so much hardships. I wish for the two to lead a happy life together.”
Park Min Young’s every words demonstrate Young Shin’s cuteness. “When she’s feeling super happy or super down, or when she’s really nervous,” she’ll sing out loud. Whenever she and her dad’s eyes meet, she’ll break into a dance, displaying her emotions without reserve. And it’s exactly because of that, Young Shin is a lot cuter and charming.
“Not long ago, Jung Hoo said the same thing, he said “Among the dramas he watched recently, Young Shin is the cutest,” and so I also jokingly replied, “That’s because I’m the one acting as her.” (laughs) “In my opinion, the scene that best describes the relationship between Young Shin and Jung Hoo is the ending of episode 5. Under a dangerous situation, Young Shin overcame her trauma and ran while grabbing Jung Hoo’s hands. Where else can you find such a character? I’ve completely fallen for the unique charms of Young Shin, and want to bring her to life. If there’s anything lacking, then it’s my problem, the character itself is perfect.”
This perfect character that the actress speaks of, in order to portray this character, there is also pain (?) unknown to others. Before she spoke, she began to laugh out loud, “Do you know how embarrassing it is to sing in front of Ji Chang Wook?”
“Ji Chang Wook is really great at singing, but my a cappella (unaccompanied) singing scene was filmed even before we were able to get close. Before filming started, I told him, “I’m sorry, but please don’t laugh,” and then the filming began. Afterwards I developed thicker skin, and so I added in hand motions, and various ad lib performances.”
As the conversation continues, our misunderstandings about Park Min Young gradually lessen, to the point that it makes us feel like the person in front of us is Chae Young Shin. Even her friends said to her, “You finally found a character suited for you.” This shows how similar Park Min Young and Chae Young Shin are.
“I think I’m pretty good actually, because I really don’t exercise much in the company, so my company prepared a dancing instructor for me. I really like dancing. If Young Shin wasn’t so fond of oldie songs in the drama, I could probably do girl group dances for everyone. What a pity, I know how to dance to all the SES songs.” (laughs)
Seeing her many unexpected sides, all misunderstandings about her gradually disappeared. On this point, Park Min Young admitted, many people said that “she looks like she can’t act”, “looks like a Seoul woman”, “looks pretentious” among others. But in actuality, she’s just a “hothead/rash youngster”.
Rather than say it’s an interview, the atmosphere feels more like a friendly chat. How does Park Min Young view reporters? The moment the question was asked, she immediately directed her sharp eyes to the reporter currently typing.
“From a moment onward, I began to observe reporters. So he/she’s wearing this kind of clothes, so you’d have to be able to type while eyes are looking at the other party, and if during a press conference, will submit articles online he/she had written beforehand when met with topics/answers that are boring to him/her. (laughs) I think what’s important is the attitude to disregard external appearances. Attitude as a reporter, or an attitude that breaks the bias toward entertainment news reporters. If it’s in the past, I’d treat it like I’m talking to a wall, but now I’m able to chat with reporters wearing comfortable/casual clothes like this. I feel like I’ve become a bit closer to them and can be at ease.”
The love that Park Min Young expressed for [Healer] can also be viewed as her thirst for acting. She claimed that she thought about “the essence of an actor” during her hiatus, and that she met [Healer] at the moment when her acting desire was the highest. Because of the script’s charm and the sense of satisfaction toward the character, she decided to take part in the project after just 3 hours of reading the script. The script writer for [Healer] probably also saw her desire for acting.
“Maybe I was too obvious (laughs), because I really can’t hide it. It’s like I met it the exact moment I cried out my thirst for acting. There was a line in the script that said “eighteen, niece” (translation note: I believe these are swear words in korean judging from the context of this paragraph, but because swear words don’t translate across languages, I translated it literally ), it’s as if my heart was suddenly shot. I was constantly nervous because I used to only portray well-mannered characters, so I find it refreshing having to suddenly curl my hair and spout out curses. Because I don’t curse usually, I spent a whole day practicing cursing. As a result, I would curse left and right throughout the day, and that became a problem too.”
Even though Young Shin is not afraid to be yelled at and is always frank, but that doesn’t give off the feeling of her being reckless and rude. It’s all thanks to Jung Hoo that Young Shin appear to be more cute and full of feminine charm. The radiance that Jung Hoo and Young Shin exhibit melted the hearts of the audience and enabled a more rich and natural flow to the story.
“We were able to work together really nicely. I think what’s most important is how much sincerity the other person shows toward his character, how to express and how to support. There’s no standard for personality or popularity, I didn’t even know that Jung Hoo’s that famous DongHae (from “Smile, DongHae”) (laughs). But we have chemistry in our acting, and also in sincerity. I’m always expressing my thanks to him for such a cool/handsome partner.”
Always not forgetting her gratitude for her costar, her love for the project, and gratitude toward acting, she said, “Because this doesn’t just concern one person,” really meaning what she said. Like a tower gradually built through the years, one can see her heart that is full of sincerity.
“I didn’t have that much joy working in the past, it was as if something was forcing and pushing me forward. I can’t even rest a little before I continue. But I thought a lot about things during my hiatus, and my desire for acting also strengthened, right now my heart is filled with gratitude more than anything.”

Park Min Young Doesn’t Care for Looking Pretty Anymore, Shrugs Off Criticism about Her Looks

In a candid interview with Star News, actress Park Min Young opens up about the lessons she learned during her two-year hiatus and how it fortified her to deal with harsh netizen criticisms about her looks while she was on the drama “Healer.”

She says, “I think this past two-year hiatus was a big turning point for me […] It was a time for me to empty myself and an opportunity to reflect. In the past, even if nobody was pressuring me, I felt pressure. The pressure and the vague fear of being forgotten were really big. At a certain point, acting became less enjoyable for me, and because I wasn’t able to fully immerse myself into my characters, I felt dissatisfied and empty. But as I took a break from acting and engaged in self-reflection, I began to treasure and experience a thirst [for acting]. It was then that I crossed paths with ‘A New Leaf.’”

“A New Leaf” would become Park Min Young’s comeback drama and the launching pad for “Healer,” “Because of the two years I took emptying myself, I was able to completely focus on acting without any idle thoughts. There was never a time that acting was more enjoyable […] I also completely let go of the idea that I had clung to stubbornly, that an actress has to no matter what look pretty.”

The actress is referring to her role as a spunky and free-spirited entertainment reporter in “Healer,” “For the first time, I abandoned myself and only thought about the character. From the hairstyle to the clothes, makeup, and fashion, I adapted everything to the character.”

She continued, “Because [I let myself go], I received quite a lot of harsh comments. (laughter) Because my character doesn’t care about her looks and lives so busily and coarsely, I filmed that way. I just laughed while reading malicious comments like, ‘I thought she was pretty, but her beauty has deteriorated,’ ‘I didn’t know she was that ugly,’ and ‘Did she get surgery to get uglier?’”

“Obviously, as an actress, it’s not the ideal situation, but as I gradually immersed myself more and more into the acting without being concerned about the angles [of the shot], everything freed up and became comfortable […] Through letting go of that one desire [to look pretty], I became freer as an actress, to the point that I wondered why I didn’t do this earlier. Because my body and mind are at ease, I don’t have any useless thoughts. Acting becomes fun, and my desire to act only flourishes.”

Park Min Young Interview with StarNews

Park Min Young expressed her thoughts on working with Ji Chang Wook.

PMY said that after the filming ended, both JCW and herself text one another with similar content. Content: “The feeling of meeting a good partner/co-star is really great.”

“A good partner/co-star isn’t judge by looks and popularity. But based on how well we can communicate and exchange our feelings. On that, JCW is really a partner/co-star who matches with me. Our conversations are usually 90% about the drama on set, and I focused a lot on bringing the right emotions out in romantic scenes. I’m thankful that he delivered his feelings as Junghoo well to me.”

Aside from comments about working with JCW, she mentioned that there was once she ran away while watching live with the crew because the scene coming up was a scene that she thought she could have done much better if she were to film it again. That was the scene when Youngshin realised Junghoo’s identity and was confiding in her dad. PMY was experiencing some infection back then and couldn’t focus well, but she subsequently realised it was an excuse to not filming well. She realised it when she was filming the scene where YS met her birth mother for the first time. But she learnt and said that Healer is the drama that she put in the most effort and hardwork to date. She said that the writer and crew helped them a lot, telling JCW and her to do as they do, and the “adults” will handle the rest, and for that she’s really thankful to them, especially Yoo Ji Tae.

ISPLUS interview with Park Min Young ‘Ji Chang Wook, actually who leads the kiss scene’

– How much your capacity of alcohol

“1 bottle of soju. I drink quite well, right? But even if I only drink a cup, my face will come up red. Righ now also reddens.”

– Do you drink often

“If there’s situation, I drink. But I don’t drink deliberately. I know how to drink moderately and enjoy it. Cannot drinking at all also not attractive, right? (laugh)”

-How about injection

“There’s no special injection. As I told you before how much my face turning red.”

– The work ended successfully

“So far, because I have many fears, I only picked roles that I can do it well. This time finally I took off the shell and came out. I wanted to totally break the mold and exceed the line, now I’d say I have the courage. Since I’ve got willingness to challenge, this work really has a deep meaning.”
– Dance, sing… even not hesitate (showing) ugly look

Originally I have many excitement. Meanwhile there was no chance the work book to be shown. What courage I have sing and dance in front of JCW who is good in singing and YJT who’s dance majored. Afterwards even if no one asked, on the spot I (knew and then) danced and enjoyed.”

– There was a lot of curse

“While I was living as YS, I got (how to) curse. I have a trauma because in the past when I cursed in front of my mom I got an awful anger (*mom scold me enormously*). Now I can do/say any curse. At first the curse accent was awkward. Like learning foreign language, I learn every syllable one by one. Because many people around me who curse a lot, should I say it fortunate? (laugh)”

– As YS you didn’t wear pretty clothing often

“However because YS was a reporter, rather than utmost adornment I think wearing casual clothing was fit. Since it was casual look, for the first time I wore male clothing while filming drama.”
_ You didn’t upset

“Not at all. In ep 10 there was scene I wore red dress. Probably for that scene, seems like I wore more casual clothes. When I wore like that (*more casual clothes*) and then I wore the red dress that sticks to body, the reaction was good. Rather than pretending very pretty it looked easygoing. Still it was pretty clothing. (laugh)”

– Not going to look pretty

That’s right. In order to look a little bit uglier, I changed my hairstyle about 3 times. I made my hairstyle seems not being cared (*pay attention*) and I used no make up (bare face) or a make up that makes no difference.”

– It was success

“My mom said ‘you have to look natural, so people like you’ and this time she liked it very much. She’s so objective.”

– Has been free

“Regardless of camera or surrounding eyes, I acted and put down everything. Feel like finding the raw of me. I felt that kind of openness/liberation. Because I threw away the greed, as an actress I became free. My body and soul are comfortable and I don’t have other/worldly thoughts, so the desire for acting keep coming out.”

– How was deep kiss scene with JCW

“It was kiss scene in 4 years (*kiss scene I had after 4 years*). Since there was many affectionate scene, people around me asked if it’s okay. Since JCW led well and I followed, there was not really a burden. Fortunately when filmed kiss scene I wore beanie and it covered (half of) my face so I could hide the emotion.”
(But JCW in interview said thanks PMY because she led)

– There was bed scene

“It seems like bed scene but not bed scene. That time it was very hard for me (*because it was very cold and she was sick*), staffs who knew it spread electric mat inside the bed. Slowly I fell asleep. The full-shot showing I was sleeping but I was really sleeping. (laugh) until the director was about to say ‘Youngshin, you have to stop sleeping’ I slept well.”

– Would you show interesting article

“In fact, I felt compared to articles there’s more amusing articles. Instead of a fruitful content, they wrote based on searches. I was going to see an article recipe, when I clicked, all of them have same content. Only changed the title, the content is still. There’s many see-worth articles, too bad they were obscured.”

– 연예부 기자가 아니라 데스크 다 됐네요. (It mention about entertainment reporter and desk. no idea what it really means)

“Since I became an entertainment reporter, 5 months I perused all the entertainment articles. Originally I didn’t read entertainment articles much, but every day I saw entertainment news in 3사 포털 (3사 portal). I found out in a row who and what work he/she get into.”
-Fortunately there’s no acting controversy

“I receive and read the writer’s script, if I act accordingly there won’t be any acting controversy/dispute. Friendly fingerprint (literally) and sufficient dialogue, those are not a respect of writer. I just did (acting) accordingly. Fortunately in acting I didn’t get curse.

  1. Best character you acted as up to this point. (YoungShin)

  1. If possible, want to marry before age (35).

After returning from 2 year hiatus, I’m currently immersed in acting. I’m not good at multitasking (doing two things at once). I should probably fall in love again after I improve in acting. I want to try acting the role of a married woman after age 35.

  1. Recently I’m immersed in (acting).

There’s a fire burning within my heart. After finishing the drama series in China, I’ll return to Korea and most likely do another drama series. I came back from a long hiatus so I’ll most likely take on lots of projects.

Do Ji Won-sunbae-nim. I feel sad for Myung Hee in Healer.

  1. Moment you’re the happiest after debut. (Right now)
